Finger Painting was recorded on Nov 2nd and 3rd, 2022. The idea was to record in the classic “Organ Trio” setting with guitar, organ, and drums, but with material chosen from a more recent era of popular music. I chose these songs because their melodies stuck with me through my life, echoing a phase that was formative, or a mood that was unforgettable. And I just like them. The songs stand up, even without vocals, like all the great standards do.

While doing some art with my 2 yr old son Felix, I realized that finger painting is a good metaphor for playing guitar. What compels one to pick certain colors or make certain shapes? For me it’s about discovery and exploration.

I bought an Ampex 440 8-track tape machine recently with hopes of making live albums, without a computer, and this is one of my first efforts. Lately, I’ve felt that too much screen time has been a detriment to music making, and that limiting your options can put you into a more focused and imaginative headspace. I enjoy the process of recording on tape and I enjoy the sound even more. We mixed this album to a stereo track in Pro Tools and worked with the sound a bit from there.

I’ll be offering custom dubbed cassettes soon, the goal is to offer something that never touched a computer, as an experiment. At the moment, this album is available for digital download and CD.
